Ok, I bought a diesel H4 mag by accident

Bought a H4 mag off of ebay, with the intention to rebuild, and install. After getting partway through the re-assembly, I found I have a diesel mag, as the impulse is setup for counterclockwise rotation (rotor also turns counter clockwise). Serial # H4 1370700 D (rebuild book says "D" means diesel)

So, does anyone need a rebuilt diesel mag? New points, new condensor, new coil, new seals, and cleaned up, lubed and timed. I certainly can't use it. If someone doesn't need one, I may take it back apart for the parts and sell the core.

Guess I should have checked the serial number and rotation before I started working on it..............
 
Early IH diesels were started on gasoline, then "switched" to diesel while running. Gasoline was easier to start, and warmed up the block.
 
not familiar with these but is it possible that the only difference is the impulse and if you use the opposite rotation impulse it will work for your needs
 
You could try selling the rebuilt mag on ebay, if I remember correctly, rebuilt diesel H4 mags bring a good price there. I would be interested in buying the mag from you, or I could trade you a rebuilt gas H4 mag for it.

Leroy, yes, you can change the rotation of an H4. the pin for the inpulse needs to be moved to the other side, and the inpulse spring needs to be replaced with a clockwise one. Since this is marked with a "D" and is an original diesel, I would prefer to leave it that way as down the road, someone else might have it, and it would be confusing. good thought though.
 
Good idea Tom. They aren't making these anymore and I'd imagine a good working diesel magneto has got to be more valuable than a gas one.
