Cub Questions'

Just purchased my deceased cousins 48 Cub with cultivators. The tractor seems to be in good overall condition. Still has the original silver seat and original tires. At one point the wiring has been "tampered" with. It is still 6V with a generator, but the pull switch has been replaced by a keyed switch, and an external coil has been added. Does this mean the magneto is not working? I would like to rewire everything back to original specs, just wondered what I might be getting into. Also, other than from CASE IH, can I purchase an oil filter from NAPA?

Most likely your mag coil is deceased. That was a common fix, and your magneto is now working soley as a distributor. The mag can be rebuilt, coils are available, but they"re not real cheap.
Wiring is straight forward on those cubs, but the old adage is that once you take the hood off, you find more and more stuff to do... next thing you know, you"re completely restoring it.
Oil filters are availble from NAPA.
Just out of curiosity, do you intend to keep the cultivator? I"m looking for one for sweet corn this year. Drop me a line.

Here's another mag that's been converted. Hal

I dont think you have a cub I think its an A the cub didnt use that kind of oil filter and the block is also from an A

Thanks for the reply. I intend to use mine in my garden as well, so I will be keeping the cultivators. However, the sickle bar mower, planter, and belly mount grader blade are available and for sale here in North Alabama. Soooo, I take it I can have the mag rebuilt and get a new wiring harness and be back to stock, right??????

That's right-find a good mag shop & they can get it back ot original. A good shop can even recharge the magnet, if it needs it. Wish you were'nt so far away, I'd love to buy your belly blade and planter, unfortunately I'd spend more (by 5 or 6 times) getting down there to pick them up than you'd charge for them, as I'm in SE SD & thats a mile or two from N Alabama. Those items are simply not common in our part of the world (Cub's are few and far between, too) & guys that have them, want to keep them. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Call Earl Lundin in SD at 605-678-2694 or 605-880-0468. Hal
PS: I would check for repair shop in your area too. Standard Magneto rebuilds them too.
