Is it suppose to do that?

Yesterday, I got around to replacing the seals behind the brake drums of my 43 H. When I took the cover off the right side, the drum flopped around like a fish out of water (discourged at this point, I didn't take the left cover off)! I though, this can't be good. So now I'm sure the bearing needs replacing. How difficult is it to remove the transmission cover? Is there anything I should pay special attention to? I figure I may as well do a thorough inspection, but would like to know what area(s) to look over extra carefully. Kevin

The cover is not hard to take off at all, but it is somewhat time consuming. You have to remove the fuel tank, fuel lines, throttle, choke, belt pulley, belt pulley rod...shall I go on. You could get it all done by removing the PTO and using that access point to get at the bull gear bolts etc, but on a restore job the best way it to replace all those seals bc they probably leak.

I've heard it can be done from the PTO, however it can be a bear. Does the PTO come out as an assembly? I've got the feeling I should open 'er and take a peek. She has a pretty good howl going down the road in 5th gear. It doesn't see much of that... mostly worked out in the woods dragging timber.

The bolts on the cover are rusted alot of imes so try not to snap them off, It isn"t hard to do. The Pto is easy to take off if you can get to the bearings from there, im not sure if you can though. If you can get to it from the PTO I think that would be easier. The gasket isn"t cheap to replace for the cover
