M rear axle bearing and seal replacement

Good afternoon Fellas,

My new to me M has been undergoing fixes and repairs since I got it a few months ago. Now I see the rear axle seals are leaking. I did an archive search and came up with a few pieces of advice.

Here are my questions. Is there an inner seal behind the ball bearing on the axle? I took of the outer cap with a CR seal # 48776-D in it. When I did that I noted some play in the bearing. Can I replace that bearing without taking the the top cover off the tractor?

THanks for the help.

Seal on end is only one , you can take pto out and push axle out by removing nut and washer holding bull gear on. Just put bolt back in end of axle and put something in between it and other bull gear and turn axle or bolt. Note, on the play in bearing, if you happen to have the bower flat roller bearing on the inside end of axle you will always feel play in that bearing so when checking for play make sure it is actually in the outside bearing not axle movement on inside. Polish any groove out of axle where seal fits.

No, there is no seal behind the outer bearing. The new ones are a shielded bearing. This means the outside is open and the inside has a piece of metal to close that side off. I would assume they use this nowdays bc the gear oil would wash the grease out and the grease would push out into the axle housing. BTW, that bearing is $200+ from Case and was about $110 at my local bearing shop. A little play isn't a big deal just keep it greased. A big bearing that turns slow like that will last for a LONG time especially on a light duty tractor.

No top cover removal necessary for the outer bearing. You can take the wheel off and CLEAN THE AXLE SHAFT. Then the cap with seal and the bearing will slide off over the axle. It isn't too hard to do. We did it on the SM a couple years ago. That seal was pretty pricey, something like $30. I would try the bearing shop for that one before I called Case. My local shop is usually half of what CNH is charging. The bad part about that is almost all of it gets UPSed in rather than being there next day like CNH.

It's not practical for me to get a single or a couple of seals from the local bearing shop because the shipping all but cancels out the price difference, depending on what the seal costs. My local CIH dealer gets stock orders in every 3 days--no shipping charges. Just depends on how soon I need it, next day service I have to pay shipping.

I hear you there. Mine doesn't charge shipping for some crazy reason. I guess they mark the parts up enough to cover it??? Don't get me wrong, I support the dealer whenever I can, but not when it costs $20-100 more. Our dealer just switched to a new stock order system that will take three days max or 10% of the sale price for next day. The old system was terrible. They only got stock orders every Thursday and you had to have the order in by Tuesday so it could take a week and a half to get something!

Yes the stock order definitely helps. I don't need next day service anyway. Every time I think I need something NOW, it gets put off for a week, because I start something else.
