300U Stuck in Reverse

My wife was mowing and got stuck. She says she found reverse and backed up only to not be able to go forward so she stopped it and came and got me. I went out and sure enough, Neutral is now reverse and I can't push it into 1 or R. If you put it into any of the other forward gears it bogs down and wants to die. I drove it back to the shop in reverse and left it. Any ideas?

Pretty easy fix
Take the shifter off of the top of the trans (bolts around the small housing at the shifter). Put it Low TA (pull lever back). Push in the clutch.
Use a big screw driver or small pry bar to align the shift rails. The right hand rail will be to the rear, it needs to be moved forward to align the slots.
Have the tip of the shifter that fits into the slots made fatter by welding a little metal onto the tip where worn, and using a grinder to make it so it just fits and moves through the pattern.
Shift in square movements in the pattern to avoid this in the future. Jim

Pull the shift lever. My H did the same thing. The reason It bogged down is cause the trans was in two gears. Check the end of your shift lever and check all the sliders. Something is buggered up!

THANK YOU!

I'll find some time this week to tear into it and I'll update this thread. I was afraid I'd be listing 300U Parts for sale.

be carfull when welding not to get it too hot and brittle, the shifter tip can break off later and fall into gears. it makes quite a mess of gears when metal goes thru. crunch, crunch

I dont usually make political statements, but I may be willing to buy it sounds like a great ride for external_link! LOL

Be careful of the steel balls and springs under the shifter housing, and be careful putting it back together, I have seen 3 or 4 that have broken housings because the detent balls were not pushed down right before bolting it back together.

That was the biggest pain in the whole process. It took about 30 minutes altogether and I should have tore into it a week ago, but I was afraid it was gonna be an all day job. I greased everything up real good before reassembling it and it's good as new.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!
