Type of oil for c

I got a Farmall C last fall with a woods mower to mow the lawn. I'm getting it ready for this spring and I have a couple questions. Is 10w 30 good oil for the engine and I was thinking about straigt 30 for the hydraulics because I heard that the oil seal leaks in the pump into the engine. Does that sound like the right way to go?
Thanks
Dale

Gee, I was going to say just the opposite. Use hydraulic oil in the hydraulic system. If the pump seal leaks, fix it.

When that tractor was new wasnt regular oil used in the hy system. You are rite i would fix the leak but if it doesent leak that bad no big deal.

Gene,
You are absolutely right. When the Touch-Control system was introduced, the manuals called out 10W motor oil. By 1950, they called out Touch-Control Fluid.

There are 2 observations I'll make from that information:
1) The system needs very low viscosity oil. If the engine was filled with an appropriate summer weight oil (30 or 10W30), the 10W will lower the viscosity a lot. The oil in the engine is still contaminated and needs to be changed.
2) IH developed/acquired, produced and released a special hydraulic oil just for the Touch-Control systems within 2 years of the first Touch-Control going into production. That strongly suggests that they had problems using motor oil in the system. How badly to you want to repeat the experiment to find out what the problem was?

This is only a second opinion, not an argument. My guess is that IH did not have Touch Control fluid ready when when the Cub, SA, and C appeared, thus 10W. Touch control fluid and now Hytran are about 10W, also. Touch Control fluid was probably more of a selling point than anything else. I currently have all parts out of my Super A's reservoir/control block. I don't see any reason that 10W would not work as there simply isn't that much to it, unlike the later hydraulics. Four check valves, a relief valve and a control valve, in addition to the two actuators and two pistons, that's about it. The block is basically clean except for a little sludge in the bottom, maybe hytran aids in preventing that, I don't know. Although only a few parts, I am always amazed at the detailed design of some of IH's parts. I do use generic Hytran in it, simply because that is what is recommended. Having said that, do I recommend 10W? No, not as long as there is something "better".

Thank's for the replies. Well before I drained the oil I opened the top petcock on the oil pan. There was about 1 1/2 quarts that drained out. Then when I drained the oil at the bottom of the pan there was a small amount of anti-freeze in the pan.Just my luck! Maybe I'll have to start another post for that problem.Looking in the archives they sell kits to repair the oil seal in the pump, That's probably the way to go. Then use hy-tran in the hyd. The anti-freeze is o-rings on the sleeves at best. Thank's Dale

The leak is either a seal or oring, depending on which pump you have--available anywhere. If the seal or oring has worn a groove in the shaft you need a $25 or so speedy or redi sleeve (trademarks). If an oring you need to have a machine shop enlarge the hole the shaft goes through to accept the sleeve. If a seal you can install it yourself.
