I bought a 1944 H that had been restored except for the lights. the previous owner had wired it for 12 volt but did not do the lights. It runs great but the lights are just there for looks. I have looked at Bob's diagrams but they are for 6 volt. can someone help me please.

It ia the same just use 12 volt bulbs in the same sockets. For bright light, it will be necessary to use a light relay (about 15 amp capacity) to switch the lights due to excessive current through the existing switch and its wire wound resistor. Jim

ok thanks.

Jim - Actually a relay NOT required if you use the old light switch on 12 volts!

Compared to 6 volts lights, running 12 volt lights cuts the current through the switch by half. So the current load through the switch becomes much less.

----

The original light switch on first ever 12 volt conversion - done on my Super M nearly 30 years ago - is still working fine.

Only difference now is the dimming coil sees half the normal current. It hence now is less effective at dimming the lights. IE on the "dim" setting the 12 volts lights will burn somewhat brighter than OEM lights do on "dim" on 6 volts.

OK thanks very much.

If your lights haven't been used for a while, try to clean off the coiled resistor on the back of the light switch as best you can (careful, it's delicate). When you first test the lights at the "DIM" switch setting, the resistor will heat up and produce a little smoke as it burns off whatever dirt is still on it. You can tell it's O.K., though, because it won't smell like hot bakelite or burning plastic insulation; it will smell like ... well ... like hot dirt! The smoke should stop within a minute or so.

I would recommend a little gentle cleaning with a soft toothbrush, followed by a puff or two of compressed air. You'll probably still get a little smoke, but not as much.

You are very correct, and I was not wordy enough in my explanation. There is a need (opinion) on Farmall tractors before the Quad lamp system fender mounted lights. I was referring to lights with much higher wattage capacity than stock or 12v stock, My poor explanation. Jim
