Just a RED story

Growing up in NW PA on my parents dairy farm I remember doing most all field work with 3 tractors, a 756 diesel, 656 d hydro, and my brothers super M, until I was 3 or so and a new 766 diesel showed up. Sure there were many others before that but I have no recollection. All those tractors are still much in use today. The next tractor I remember being purchased was a 460 d., then a low houred 544 gas. I thought wow, what a collection we have now. Then came the 1086, I though it was a modern beast though it was already 20 yrs.old at this time. Soon after followed a 450 gas(mostly for ant. pulling) a bn, and an f20. I had no idea why my dad kept buying these tractors yet never sold any. Since then a restored 1066 and most recently a 5088 has come to our farm. My brother added a 404(my dads from yrs.ago) to his super m and I now have a 340 utility and a super a. It amazes me now about how often we use to switch many implements in one day and now an implement may stay on one tractor for months. The 756 has been the real workhorse all these years. From heavy tillage, to running the blower and spreading on a daily basis it owes nothing yet will not quit. I have no idea what may come next or even why I wrote this. I just felt compelled to share.

Mark, just out of curiosity, where abouts in NW Penna are you? I'm from near Meadville. Another IH farmer is always nice to know of.

I drive back and forth from SC Kansas to NE Kansas (about 200 miles each way) almost every week. It's amazing how many older IH tractors, even back to the letter series, you still see in regular use... and not just on "hobby farms".

MarkW and Kippster, I am from Harmonsburg (Near Conneaut Lake), and now live just south of Butler.

We should get together sometime at the Pioneer show or similar.

Oh, I see the two bangers, but [u:8b28c1a0eb]most[/u:8b28c1a0eb] of them are for show and not being used. I see one 720 on a round baler east of Marion, but that's about all. [/u]

Here in Maine ya gotta have one tough tractor, one that can plow harrow mow bale spread cow poop and plow the driveway and barnyard out in the winter at 35 below zero and thats why we got all the John Deere 2 bangers.Them red un's wont take it! Hoss

Hey, I have no problem with John Deeres, was practically raised on them. Started pulling a baler with an A when I was 10 years old (had to be no older than 10 because in '53, when I was 11, Dad got his first 60). I'm just saying what I see of tractors made 1960 and earlier that are actually being used in the field. I see Ms, W-6 and 9s, 400s and 450s, 460s and 560s being used. Not many, but like I said, the only working 2 cyl. JD I see is one 720. I have never actually seen it baling, but it is hooked to a NH round baler in an open shed and appears to be in use. I see several old IHs hooked to various things at different times and on occasion see them in use. I do see a heck of a lot of 4010s and -20s still in use.

Tom and Mark, We really should get together at Pioneer Show, if nothing else, for lunch or something. That would be really neat. Who knows, we might recognize each other but never knew the name that went with the face!! Kippster

I'm right in between you guys. Address is Saegertown but I'm about 5 minutes north from the Pioneer show grounds.

When we sold out I had the SM, H, B, and AC 7580, we also had an AC 190, 300, 400, 756, 786, 2x 1066, 1566, 3788, and CIH 4240. The one 1066 stayed on the (too big for it) slurry spreader year round. The other on the 15' discbine and the 15 stayed on the chopper all summer and the 190 on the round baler.
