Hydraulic cylinder question

I'm going to have a custom built small diameter cylinder made to trip my #39 plow so I don't have to do the pull rope thing. Shoulders can't handle that anymore. Can you use a single action cylinder on the modern hydraulic systems?
I want the hydraulics to compress the cylinder to trip the plow but then a spring over the cylinder rod section to reset it. Will that work or is it going to have to be a 2 way cylinder

Yes, it will work. You will run the supply to the rod end of the the two way cylinder and when you supply fluid to the rod end the cylinder will retract compressing the spring if the spring is installed over the rod. When pressure is removed the spring will extend the rod from the cylinder. You will have to put a vent fitting on the clevis end or piston end of the cylinder so that you do not trap air on the piston end.

First off, a single action cylinder will only "extend" with the hydraulics, not "compress" or retract. You can use a double acting cylinder and vent the end you are not pressurizing, but I would recommend you use a filter of some sort if you do that, to keep dust and dirt out of the cylinder. Then you would need to operate the valve in the other direction to allow the fluid to return to the system. Also it will no doubt take a pretty healthy spring to push the fluid back to the tractor system and extend the cylinder.
I take it you want to operate the mechanical plow lift with a cylinder rather than pull the rope, is that correct?

You are better off putting the spring inside the cylinder. It eliminates scratching the chrome on the rod. Whoever is building the cylinder will probably make the same recommendation. The only drawback is sizing the spring. If it is not adequate, the cylinder will have to be disassembled again.

You can always oversize the spring (in terms of tonnage) and the hydraulic system won't give a damn.
