Type of oil for Lift All in an M

I see by the posts it is ok to put 30w oil in the Lift All on my M, does it need to be non-detergent or will the regular oil work?

I use 30w non-detergent in my H Liftall and it works fine. I have read from others on this site that detergent oil may foam and reduce Liftall effectiveness - but I don't know that from experience.

It used to be non-detergent but any 30W will probably work now. The antifoaming agents used in current detergentated oils makes it a non-issue.

The same issue has also been resolved in "splash lube" small engines. Until the mid 1980s or so you had to use non-detergent oil due to foaming, now its not an issue and no manufacturer will even warranty their engine if you use non-detergent oil.

like the other guys said, 30wt non detergent works fine. i run hy-tran in all my liftall pumps, so all the implements have the same oil in em.

I started using 20w50, same as in my engines, because of worn pumps, and it works well. When it is cold is is the same as 20w, and will stay thicker when hot. It does not seem to be detrimental at all. I use three LiftAlls hard all summer baling hay.

Just think about this, if a high detergent oil foamed, how would it work out in an engine using hydraulic lifters. Not very well is the answer. All detergent oils have an anti-foaming additive in them. Non detergents may not.

After doing some more looking 30 weight non-detergent is the winner, suspending the dirt in the oil (detergent type) and running it through the pump is not a good idea. Any other thoughts on the subject are more than welcome.

Non-detergent is certainly is OK, but recognize that the size particles that will remain suspended in detergent oil are much smaller than the clearances in the pump, just like clearances in your new car engine, which I'm sure you put detergent oil into.

You seem to know what you are talking about, I took the info I found at face value because it made sense, never took into account the particles were too small to matter, I guess it would be fine to use the 30 wt detergent.

If you use an external valve, remember that you can put a filter in the return line. Motor oil is fine and works well, but will entrain air quickly if the reservoir get low and the pump sucks air when the rams are extended. It doesn't bleed out very well. Stuff like Hy-TRAN handles that situation better.
