Hi everyone,
I'm working on a 1949 W-9 with an I-9 engine. I need to replace or rebuild the starter. I'm not sure if it is the right starter for this tractor since someone has done some mods to it. Should this starter have 10 or 12 teeth? Does it even matter?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks very much.

My 1951 W9 has starter number 1108920. My Wilson catalog lists 1108938 for the starter. They both use drive number 1892342. That drive is 10 tooth, CW rotation. It has a 15.9mm ID, 39.5 gear OD, 144mm tooth length. The spring has nine turns.

My 1950 TD9 has starter number 1108925. That uses drive number 1892344. That drive is 12 tooth, CW rotation. It has 15.9mm ID, 46mm OD, 146mm tooth length. The spring has nine turns.

It looks like your gas engine should use a 10 tooth drive.

Dear Owen, with respect, you have long teeth! I think a decimal point is missing. 144 is near 6inches Jim

Thanks for catching that. If I had taken a moment to think about it I would have realized that TL must mean total length, not tooth length.

I meant to ask you about your reply about running a M with the M&W live power clutch, just what kind of "bailing" you were doing with it?

I needed to pump out the bottom of the boat while using the PTO mounted pump and the wheels (being used as a side wheel paddle arrangement) could then be controlled with the hand clutch, braking to steer.......Never mind! Jim

Just wanted to say thanks very much Owen.
That info was exactly what I needed. Now if I can only find it. My supplier no longer carries it and only has a 133 mm long drive. The shorter drive probably explains why I have about 3/8 inch of play in my starter. Must have been what was used the last time this starter needed repair
Anyway, thanks again Owen.

If you are talking about armature end play, that is controlled by a thrust washer on each end. Total end play should be about 1/32 inch or possibly a little less.

The drive end should have three washers on it. The one on the end has a smaller ID and is the thrust washer. The other two, one thick one and one thin one, are stop washers for the drive. There should be about 1/32 inch gap between them and the drive when assembled. With the wrong drive I could see where there would be about 3/8 inch instead.
