I took our generator to the local auto/electric shop to have it converted. He told me that all I needed was to use a 12v regulator in place of the 6v reg and I'd be good to go.

Is this correct?

I thought the generator had to be converted to be able to even charge 12 volts.

Dan (below) is correct. The regulator will make it charge, but the field winding will be operating at about twice its intended voltage. It will shorten its life. It needs the coils changed. There are true 12v generators in the same case and for IH/Farmall tractors. That would be the best. Jim

Yes, changing to a 12 volt regulator will make it put out 12 volts. But it will not put out any more total energy (wattage).

If your maximum generator output at 6 volts was 20 amps (just to pick a number), it will be half that, or 10 amps at 12 volts. Double the volts at half the amps equals the same watts as original.

It will do 12 volts, but it can never put out nearly as much power as even a small 12 volt alternator.

But, if it still has a magneto, and all you need is to charge the battery for starting, it may well be enough for your needs.

Whether that is acceptable or not is up to you.

Changing to 12v is sure not the answer why not just check what you have as 6v will start that engine everyday of the year.
