Planting with a 140

Was just wondering if anyone has tried this.

Yesterday I planted about an acre of zippercream and cream 40 peas on top of 4 hundred pounds of 10-10-10 that was put out a week ago. I very seldom fertilize peas, but this year I am trying something a little different.

We farm with a 140, set up on 44" rows. What I have done is offset the planter to the right of the draw bar so I can plant up one row and back down the same row. The offset gives me about 12" between the 2 rows of peas on one 44" row.

Basically I figured I can get twice as many peas on the same amount of ground.

Has anyone tried this and what may be some of the drawbacks.

Most crops compensate for population. Here row crops are planted in 30 inch rows. 44 inches is probably due more to tradition than anything else. So, you have a spacing equivalent to 1 row every 22 inches. If you are short on water, perhaps you should have cut the seeding rate in half to get the same population as in the one 44 inch row. With adequate water you may get more peas, but it won't be twice as many, maybe 10-25% more, since 44" rows are pretty wide.

I know the yield isn't ging to be twice as much. I am hoping for a little better than 15 to 25%. Maybe the fertilizer will make up for a little and we get a little more rain than normal this year.

The 44" row is due to the size of the tractor. It is a one row tractor.

Yes it's one row. When the tractor was designed in the late 30's, 40 inch rows or wider were common, so that the horse/mule could walk between the rows. The A can straddle two 30 inch rows, but IH only designed a one-row cultivator. I really doubt if you will get more than a 25% increase because of the ability of the crop to compensate for population.

Well I guess only time will tell for sure. I'm not out much if it doesn't work. Even a 10% increase in yield will pay for the extra seed and fertilizer. I'll let you know what happens in 2 months or so.

Thanks,
