Jerry,

Turn the crank to where the dowl pin is in the top of the crankshaft flange. Then hang the flywheel on it to get the bolts started. I sometimes use a 1" X 4" or prybar to move the flywheel side to side and to make a sling to raise and hold it into the hole. Trick is to support so that it cannot fall.

I sit on a very short stool that puts my bent legs about the height of the flywheel, rest it on my legs and grunt.

I am not familiar with a Farmall flywheel yet but when I was working as a millwright when I had something heavy and awkward I would take a couple of longer bolts and cut the heads off. One should be longer than the other so you only have to start one at a time. Some times I would cut screw driver slots in the end if they would not protrude, or if they do, grind flat spots. You can also make some marks ahead of time for proper indexing.

Use a piece of 1/2" plywood about 2' long by 7" wide. Bolt it to two of the clutch plate bolt holes with longer bolts. then lift the bottom end of the plywood with a floor jack. this allows all the time in the world, and easy positioning, turn the engine to line up the dowel as best as it can to align. I think he's trying to reinstall the flywheel from underneath. The tractor is NOT split, right?

I'm afraid that bulling it back up in place under there is going to be the best bet. This is the kind of job Dad waits for me to come home to do usually...
