amp meter question

I put a new amp meter on my 300U today. After changing out a battery cable I started it up and the meter went crazy back forth like there was an earthquake or something. Then I remembered I hadn"t repolarized the regulator so I shut off the tractor and polarized the regulator. The amp gauge is doing the same thing when I get the rpms up half way. The system is a 12 volt generator with negative ground. Any idea what"s happening?

A marginal voltage regulator will be erratic like that. A loose connection can also be intermittent. If you have a different VR, try it to see if it helps. A bad armature could do it, as could weak brush springs or worn brushes, but my guess is VR. Jim

I would suggest checking charging voltage with an analog volt meter to see just how erratic your voltage is. A lot of ammeters are poorly dampened and even an acceptable operating regulaltor will make them jump all over the place. Just a thought.
