I picked-up a farmall f20 to work on this winter, the engine has a backfire throw the carb. idles but is really lacking in power when you give it the gas i was wondering if anyone has any ideas about that. I was thinking it might be a sticking valve or maybe it might be out of timing? the engine looks to be rebuilt by someone, but it did sit around for a couple of years.

Valves and timing would be the first things to check.
With the power loss I would check the timing first and see if that helps.

She's probably just got a stuck valve, pretty common problem when they sit. Pull the valve cover oil em up and tap it loose. Don't forget to oil the top end every time you start it and roll em over every so often when they're in storage.

Check to make sure that you have the firing order going the same way the rotor turns. It will run the opposite way and backfire a lot -- two cyclinders are firing the right time and two cyclinders are firing when the intake valves are open.

Yes, I am speaking from experience!

all of the above are corect.I HAD an F -20 and experienced what they-re talking about.ALSO, check the priming cups to be sure they are closed
