gear noise farmal A

I get a kind of a grinding type noise when I run the A in reverse or 1st gear. It doesn't sound like metal is being sheered, but does sound loud and like something needs grease or oil. A metal sound. Second, third, and forth are good, no noise. This noise seems to come from the left side of the tractor back by the rear wheel close to the tractor body. Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks in advance.

Gear noise is common in these tractors. If you don't hear it at slow speeds in the higher gears it is probably not a final drive problem. It is pretty easy to take the top off the transmission and have a look to make sure the gears are not getting ground up for some reason but I'd bet they are A-OK.

Pulling the top is a wise idea there is an aluminum oil slinger that is notched on its outer edge that can give trouble. Jim
