Cub lo boy engine knock

Guy has a lo boy for sale. Ad states- I am unable to track down a noise that only starts when the engine is hot. I have checked the oil pan and no metal was found. Oil pressure is good at high, and low rpm. Not sure where the noise is coming from, or cause. Might not even be the engine. What are your thoughts? Is is a lemon?, stay away from it, causes, cures? He has an ok price on it, Thanks, Steve

Iron has a funny way of conducting sound. It could even be coming forward from the transmission. Things that are fairly tight in there when the already stiff oil is cold, will loosen up quite a lot as the oil starts to warm up and loosen. Which would be about the same time the motor starts to warm up, especially if you're driving the tractor around to warm things up. A stethoscope or even a piece of broomstick in its place will help you track it down.
