going to put alternator on farmall c with mag on it should i run the wire straigt to the battery or can i run i to an amps meter then to the battery thanks neal

The alternator output wire (big) should go to the amp meter. If the system is now Negative ground, it will need to have the leads reversed on the amp meter. Attach the Wire to the side of the meter not connected to the wire going to the battery cable at the starter switch. If a 3 wire setup, a momentary contact switch is needed in the #1 terminal wire to excite the alternator.(or a hot wire going to a oil pressure switch (normally open switch from NAPA) that allows exciting voltage to #1 terminal.
The #2 terminal goes directly to the big post on the alternator, a 6" wire.

It will work as described before I started talking about the #1 and #2 terminals.
A one wire unit will often require a full throttle blast to get it to start charging (the engines turn pretty slow on these tractors and thus it can be tough to get it to start charging. Once it starts it will be fine.
Some also have a fair current draw when installed and not running. This is OK on a tractor operated every day, but is can run down a battery.
Check this by using a milliamp meter between the alt and its wire. if drawing over 100ma, it will drain the battery over time if not disconnected. when shut off. (a 50 amp rated switch in the alt wire would be a convenient way to stop the drain if it the drain is as described). Jim
