Hello my question is can you change out the main crank bearings through the oil pan opening. Or do you need to take the motor completely apart.I have replaced them in a MM Jetstar 3 from the side opening of the engine. Thank you, Brian
 
Since you don't know how much the crankshaft may be worn on the mains and rods. I would pull the engine and have your local auto machine shop to measure the rod and main journals. They can determine if they're eggshaped or worn and whether they need to be ground undersize. Have them furnish the new bearings. Hal
 
you can not replace the rear main easly. the flywheel blocks the bolts to remove therear main seal (split bracket) and i "m telling u that u want to replace this seal in a easy matter, really u want to replace the front one too.the other thing to consider is the crank goes thru the front cover and it"s going to have to be replaced also, consider this if it"s worth doing do it rite.
 
To summarize the other two (so far) posts, if you need bearings the crank has to be ground. Therefore the engine needs to come out.
 
I just rebuild a c135 engine last month so this is fresh in my memory. To answer your specific question, yes, you can replace the rear main bearing while the crank is still in the engine. The back bottom plate of the the engine block (the part that the back of oil pan bolts to) needs to be removed first in order to get access to the bearings. You need to take off the 3 bolts on that back plate. They are accessible after you remove the 2 bolts holding on the bell housing cover plate. The 3 bolts will back out and just clear the flywheel(unless some joker put longer longer ones in!) Then you can remove the back plate and gain access to the rear bearing. I"m not saying you should replace the bearings while in the engine, just saying it can be done.
