SH steering u-joint

Is it possible to replace the ujoint between the forward and aft shafts on a SH? Can it be done with the aft shaft still in the pedestal. I can't seem to be able to pull that aft shaft foward because of the interference with the tank mount/forward shaft bracket. The ujoint is total toast.

i have a 44 H with the same problem been thinkin about it for a while now ....cut it off with a portable band saw and weld in a new one, that is if i can find one that will fit the shafts...most of my trouble is the bushings in the pedesel i dont know how to start that it"s got a death wobble in high gear 3/4 throtle got to hang on tight then the wheel starts to shake bad
 
There's one on ebay for $65. Would have to cut the aft shaft, and drill noth of them.

If you go to a place that sells u joint kits, it will take a Spicer 5-92X joint kit. Last one I got was about $14. Getting the old joint out was the hardest part.

You need to loosen the set screws on the collar that is just forward of the steering column support post, then pull rear ward on the steering wheel. You will probably need to hammer on the u-joint to get it loose from the forward steering shaft. You can get the replacement ujoint cross from Case-IH, but if yours is total toast, the yokes are probably worn beyond repair.

I have the collars loose, and the two shafts seperated. But I don't see how to get that aft shaft, the one with the yoke and ujoint on it off. It sure isn't going to go out toward the back because of the yoke. And it hits the mount plate in front of the gas tank when you try to go forward.
How do you get the ujoint cross out of that yoke while the shaft is on the tractor?

Just loosen or remove the three bolts holding the steering post. Then you can pull wheel, pull shaft out forward. Or if the yoke is still ok, replace the cross kit right on tractor. Or cut off yoke and weld on a new one.

Or remove the steering wheel, and pull the shaft out frontwards, just the opposite of how it was all put together at the factory.
 
OK After closer inspection I see it's the cross that is the culprit. No slop where the cross is in the rear shaft yoke. Is the shaft threaded onto that yoke? Looks like a star washer there between the shaft and the yoke.
How do I get the cross out of the shaft yoke?

The yoke is welded to the shaft.

C-Clamps, or remove the entire wheel/shaft/yoke assembly and do the work in your bench vise with some appropriately-sized sockets.

I can't remember exactly how we did it, but my Dad and I replaced the steering yoke on my SH with the entire assembly on the tractor. We used a combination of vise grips and C-clamps to press the old bearings out and press the new ones in.

I think we pulled on the opposing legs of the cross to pop each bearing cup out individually. They're just pressed in IIRC.
