dowels in 300U steering

My 300U steering needs a dowel after having it taken apart. I"m not familar with dowels for metal parts. How do I measure for them and where can I buy them. Does a place like NAPA have them. Are the measurements more like normal bolts or are they measured in thousandths and would need calipers to get a measurement.

If yours is lost, it will require two measurements, one to determine its diameter (measuring carefully with an expanding gauge, then measured with a good micrometer), The depth into both holes that a dowel can go into is also needed. The dowel should be a locational fit. This means it should be able to be tapped in easily, but not driven in. A careful center ground pin (machine shop) will do it. The numbers should be exactly the same measured diameter, or .0005 interference. Jim

Standard dowel pins are case hardened to at least 50+ Rockwell C and are a plus .0002 over nominal diameter. Any tool and die shop will have a complete selection from 1/8 to 5/8 inch diameter. McMaster-Carr has a complete inventory, subject to minimum package quantities:1/4 x 3/4 are $8.50 for 50, 1/2 x
1 1/4 are $8.81 for ten. Considering their precision, they are cheap, it's just a matter of getting your hands on one. Regular cold rolled bar stock (soft) is always .001 to .002 undersize

Charlie, if you are talking about the ones in the case halves and can wait till the weekend...I will look ad see if I have any. I should have some around in the shop.
I'll drop them in the mail to you next week...just pay postage.
