Farmall 400 Hydaulics

Hey guys! Got the Dual 250 loader on my 400 today. Unfortunatley I have no hydraulic function. :( I have never tested the hydraulics on this tractor but the engine would always bog down a little when any of the valve handles were moved. I got the bucket cylinder to tilt once and the main cylinders to lift about 8" and then it started sputtering like low on fluid (was full before loader on). Needless to say I turned the tractor off to check again. Fluid level was fine but now I have no hydraulic function. Engine does not even bog down when the valve handles are moved. Loader came off a working tractor but I did straighten some of the steel lines and replace all of the hoses. Think maybe I just knocked something loose and plugged up something? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!!

Just curious Matt where did you check the hyd oil? The tractor hyd resivor only holds approx 1 1/2 gal. Would need an auxillary resivor to run a loader off the tractor hyds. Tractor resivor is below the hyd levers on thr RH side of the tractor, 3/4 pipe plug with a dipstick on it.

that tractor does not have enough reservoire. you need an external tank with atr least 5 gal. cap.,10 gal is better.then install pto pump.pto pump-$450. replacement 'mag' pump-over $700.

I have a Dual 250 loader on one of my M's, and the reservoir for the loader is actually the left rear pedestal of the loader. You'll probably have to remove the return hose (where it screws in the top of the reservoir) to add any fluid.
I'm running the loader off the 1949 M's M&W "live pump" and although it's slow, it lifts pretty good.

I know the left upright was originally a reservior and I am not using a PTO pump. The factory pump puts out 14 GPM which is plenty to run a loader at a decent speed. This loader has an auxillary tank welded to the right upright upright although I don night have it plumbed in yet. The factory reservoir is FULL of fluid! This is checked at the filler plug on the right side of the reservior. Low fluid is not the probelm here.

Farmall live Hyd pumps are notorious for difficulty priming. You got a slug of air into the pump.
The reservoir needs to be connected. I would try working the hitch lever both ways for about ten minutes (running) to work air out. Pressurizing the reservoir with 15 PSI can also push air out (while running and moving levers. Jim

Ok I will give that a try. Have been working them back and forth alot but not for 10 minutes in one shot. Hooked the loader up to another tractor today and it all works as it should. Flushed the system on the 400 today and checked everything in the pressure regulator block. Everything was free and seemed as though it should be working properly. If it does not start working, do I need to look at rebuilding the pump?

Played with the lever for a while again this afternoon. Still no luck. Also tried changing the valves back and forth between dual and single-acting. Like I said, the engine is not bogging down when the levers are moved forward/reverse like there is either no fluid moving to the valves or no pressure. What else can I try or check? Thanks!

Before you put the loader on and it bog down a little, it is probably air in line. It is hard to get out. May have to run it for a while before it picks up. If the suction line has a short piece of hose before the pump, exchange it temporary for a clear hose to see if the fluid is moving at all. Keep moving the levers and turning the steering wheel and it should grab ahold. Then watch clear hose to see if bubbles keep passing in the oil. If never stops you have another leak to look for. Mine always picked up when oil was cold, Not when oil was hot.

There is a screen(( # 10 in pic )) in the hydro block that gets dirty or ripped and they will not work. A 1/2" wrench and 4 bolts on top(spring loaded)and a straight screw driver will do the trick. A brass top with a slot is what you take out and check. Any deformaties and get a new one. Did you put a new hyro filter in???? 4 bolts on the right side of reservoir??? if pugged, same thing. There is a vent on top of reservoir. Make sure it is free and not plugged....

Had trouble with that screen on my 300 so already checked that and everything else in that regulator block. Main screen in the reservoir was also cleaned. Guess it is just air locked like Jim suggested. Just have to finally get it worked out! Worked the levers back and forth for a while again today with no luck. Finally shut the tractor down becuase the pump was starting to get hot. Hope I can get this worked out soon!
