Timing a McCormick-Deering 15-30 (22-36)

1930 Model (22-36)
E4A Magneto
The Instruction Book tells me to find T.D.C. by turning the engine "...until D.C. mark on the flywheel and the pointer on the bell housing line up..."
The Overhauling manual says "...the words 'dead center' on the flywheel should be exactly underneath the small triangular pointer on the belt pulley carrier.
I have removed the belt pulley carrier cover but CANNOT find the triangular pointer. I have another 22-36 and I cannot find its pointer, either.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

i havent looked for the marks anytime, but maybe put your thumb in the plug hole and turn the engine over till you feel it blowing compression out. then use a small piece of rubber hose or something to feel the piston coming up to tdc. once you got it there take a look around at the dc marks on the flywheel and see if you can spot the pointer, as it should be there in that area.you might just be missing it.

It should be similar to a 10-20 and on the 10-20 if you remove the clutch housing cover it exposes the flywheel and you can see the marks real good. There are a lot of initals such as DC IO EC and so forth there is a triangle pointer like you mentioned. You could also remove the valve cover and see when both #1 valves are closed and then check the marks on the flywheel.
Hope this helps

It's just a little notch cast in the edge of the housing. Probably straight up. You are probably looking right at it and don't know it.
