I have a 1486,
It is stuck in between gears. It has always done this and I could wiggle the gear shifter and it would come out, Seams like it is stuck in reverse and a forward gear. When I put it in forward it sounds like it is grinding reverse it loads the engine down.

I have the seat off but I am really lost.

Any ideas to help me out?

thanks Ron

I had similar only it was in park but the gear shilf was out and could go in any gear and sound like rip grind noise

a lot of the time when this happens i have been able to remove the floor board and then reach under the the deck bellow the seat and move the hi lo shifter back into nuteral. then you should be able to realine the shifter leaver. this shifter system get woren thy can be a real problem less you are real carefull. ih has a plate that fits down in the shif quatrant that helps with this. i cant find the part number but next time i am in the ih dealer i get it or i well call them in the am

You have to remove the floor not the seat. The high, low ,reverse is stuck in the middle. You can pull it loose on top of the transmission once you have the floor removed.

if you had read my post,, that is what i said..lot of the time when this happens i have been able to remove the floor board and then reach under the the deck bellow the seat

I am assuming it is in reverse, and forward.

But yea, that is what I have on my hands, did you get it working?

It used to be that easy to get out of gear,,,,,

The gear shifter is moving correct, But the Gears are still stuck, I have the seat off and it is looking like I am going to have to open the top plate that the gears go into the trans..

I can move all my gears with my shifter, and shifter seams to go in gear correct, But when I let off the Clutch IT grinds....

Any one taken this top plate of the trans Off??

Looks like it has about 15 screws and cast iron, directly under the seat..

If so, what will I be running into???

Thank You every one for your Help!!

I have a 1086 that has done this before. I always take a pry bar and go in from the fron and under the cab and try and line things up.........I've never had to pull the floor board up.

ok sounds like the little dowel that goes in the shift rail may have pulled out so you well have to take off top cover. now there is a specal tool that pushes out the revers shafter as you pull the top cover off if you dont have one borrow one. if it come loose then it drop the revers shifter out line whitch then you have to take off side plate on tran, whitch if you have both fuel tanks is a pain. second before raising the top cover take tractor out of park and place a 1/2 inch nut under the park powel so you can pull top off. a i. t. manual would be also a good idea. then when you reinstall it there a detent spring that well fall off that holds the to shirt arms in detent . a specal tool for that also. but what i do is drill a 5/16 inch hole and tap it for 3/8 bolt.. there is a knot,, raised spot on top cover between the to manure lever place the bolt in far enough to hold the two lever back keeping the spring tight once top cover is installed back out bolt fill whole with silcone. and by the way if you never done one i would get someone to do it they are not easy even though i have done probly a 100 or so of them. you have the worest done removing the seat good luck

if you are in 2 gears there is no grind in gears you stall or burn clutch, but if you are still in park and think your out of park , you will hear a horrible sound like grind, on our 1586 had to take floor boards off no big deal and pry the parking linkage out, dont use force just tap and wiggle

Are you saying it grinds when in gear and tractor is moving, if so, lots of times they don't come completely out of park and pawl is making the noise. This can be checked readily to see if lever goes in and out of park ok, if not, look at linkage on top of range trans cover, bell crank will not be completely over center out of park. Common problem along with what others have suggested.

Ok,, Good deal, Just what i was looking for! Sounds like a pretty big job. But I guess I will have to tackle it! Thank You !!!!
