H steering center support- binding

When I went to put the H back together after rebuilding the front end, The steering shaft binds in the cast bearing attached to the tank support. It binds at the bottom of the bearing, so you cant shim the support to elimate it (it would need to go down). The shaft is not bent. All original parts. The center support does not seem bent at all. I put jackstands under the frame and unbolted the front end to see if that was bolted on a bit off, but thats not it either. I didnt notice if it was like that before I took it apart. Any ideas?

Reading the description is difficult because it's hard to figure out exactly where you mean it's binding. (Maybe it's just me). Any way you can post a picture of the area?

I had problems reinstalling mine. But it turns out the previous owner installed the shaft guide on the wrong side of the tank support pedestal. I took it off and put it on the other side and it worked fine.

That doesn't sound like your problem, so I'd have to see where it's binding, and what the area looks like around it to make a logical guess.

Are you sure it's in that bearing? Perhaps something is binding where the worm screw meets the bolster gear? Or maybe up at the steering wheel post?

try supporting the tractor under the bell housing instead of the frame rails. then loosen the rail bolts at the rear and at the front and see if you can get a little more wiggle room out of the front end. you may need to pry loose the rails at the front by the bolster to re-position it. sounds like the bolster is tipped back slightly toward the rear of the tractor. loosen the engine mount bolts a couple turns too.

Glad to hear I"m not the only one to experience this. I solved mine with milling the flat surface of the cast iron piece to change the angle although I like the suggestion to loosen everything and "wiggle". I didn"t go that route since evrything was freshly painted and I preferred not to monkey with the rails etc.
