3388 hydraulic pump

I got the old pump out from the left lower side of the rear end. The gear wheel had been chewed up very badly, with only one complete tooth left on the gear. That would be the pump gear. I reached inside and got all the big pieces and then used a magnet to get the smaller pieces. The guy who checked out the replacement pump I got, told me to go to some extraordinary measures to make very sure there were no more shavings in the rear end as these piston pumps are very unforgiving of foriegn matter. And I don't want to replace another one any time soon.
Question: What would be the procedure for getting the most shavings out of the system? Of course, changing the filters very often but what else can I do?

The simplest way to do this is (1) place a cow magnet in along side the Hd. filter , (2) place a couple of them in the lower sump in the rear end . You will not believe how much they will work . The one in the filter housing you can inspect each time you change the filter .

IH had a filtering tool kit for cleaning up the system after failures where there was a lot of debris left in the tractor. You blocked off the bypass valves in the filters and used a different part number filter. The other part was an auxiliary filter that was in a loop from the hydraulic couplers to flush the auxiliary valves and lines.

The blocked off bypass filters were to insure that no oil made it to the pumps without passing through a filter. The filters used are not as fine a restriction as the normal filter to ensure that they flow enough oil with the bypass valves blocked off.

The guy that told you that piston pumps are "very unforgiving of foreign matter" is right.... do whatever it takes to get it clean. Gear pumps can live a long time with some contaminent, but not piston components.[/list]
