39 Farmall M. How do I hook a amp meter to a one wire alternater....I have not even attempted so I have have no clue how hard or easy it is...any help is appreciated..Thanks in advance!

Save yourself some grief. Put a 3 wire alternator on it. Not hard to do, will not run the battery down if it sits for a long time, don't have to rev up the engine to get it to start charging, cheaper too!

Diagrams can be found in the archives.

well i already have a one wire. I paid 40 bucks for it from autozone and its a lifetime warranty. I was hoping to stick to that because if it does go bad I get handed a new one for no charge!

I can't tell you by nut and terminal where to connect the wire but I can tell you electrically how it goes.
The amp meter is a series device, that is, it is in series with (in one side and out the other of the meter), the charge lead. The charge lead is the lead fron the big terminal on the alternator to where-so-ever and finally ends at the battery terminal. I'm wondering why you had no amp meter?
If you are doing a generator to alternater conversion It's a lot deeper subject. Hang in there you will get help.
Good luck, Sam

the wire from the batt. terminal on the alt. goes to the ampmeter, then to the battery side of the starter. a simple way to determine which side of the ampmeter to connect the wire from alt.to is, to connect it to one side by it's self ,then connect the ign. and light switch to the other side, then turn lights or ign. on if it shows discharge your wired correct, if it shows charge you need to switch sides with the wires.

An ammeter (a 2 terminal in/out series passive current measuring device) has a SUPPLY side which has but one wire, to the hot ungrounded battery post, often via a wire to the starter switch where the big battery cable attaches. The other terminal is the LOAD terminal which attaches to the output of the alternator PLUS feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition.

For a Neg ground tractor the + is the SUPPLY while the - is the Load, opposite that for a Pos ground tractor

If its wired correct if you turn on lights or ignition engine not running it should swing over to - discharge...If it does opposite of that reverse the leads

Got it???
