Ok guys i've flipped through the archives and can't figure it out...my amp gauge was pegged on the discharge side, so i looked and the battery wasn't possitive ground (6v) like it should have been. all the wires are rigged up to be possitive ground it looks to me, so when i switched the battery around it's pegged all the way on the charge side..i putted around yesterday and nothing fried or smoked or was hot....what's goin on now guys? i just picked this up not too long ago and havn't had time to mess with much of it

I'd hook a multi meter to the system before I'd go swappin and playing with wires.

Voltage regulator died?

Maybe a 12V tractor and a 6V was stuck in it? They do make 12V generators and they do look the same. Some 6v generators were converted over.

Generator may be shot?

Gauge may be shot?

Its unlimited as to what may be wrong. Just start with a meter to find out what is charging or discharging-working or not.

If it is a 6v (as I assume it is) the battery should be placed in it with positive ground.
I also assume it discharged as soon as you hooked up the battery, and before starting it.
There is a high current load on the system. There are three places it could go. One is to the charging system. A stuck cutout relay in the regulator, or a shorted wire would do it.
The second is to the ignition. That would only happen if the switch were on? or the wire from the Amp meter to the switch is shorted to ground.
The third is in the light system and that is not it unless the lights are on.
I would start with disconnecting the VR/cutout and seeing if it still does it.
The next thing would be to trace the wires from the Amp meter to make sure they are not rubbing the frame. Jim

thanks guys...i was leaning towards a bad VR but we'll get out the multimeter and check things out soon...bought a new battery for it and it only lasts maybe 6-7 starts then needs recharged, so somethings goin on...who knows, might re-do all the wiring, new VR and hope the genny is good...and the wonderful hobby pit continues ha ha, thanks guys
