I got a farmall 706 diesel and was low on fuel when i started it up this spring after setting this winter didn't have any regular diesel but had some dyed kerosene so i put 5 gal of that in and started it up and let it run for 1 hr or two my question is will that do any harm to the engine i don't understand the differnt in diesel fuel anyway you've got no.2/ clear/ premium/ number 1/ can somebody explain the differnce i know i should have ask before i started it up to my question of putting kerosene in it seemed to run all right Thanks for any help
 
Kerosene is pretty much the same thing as # 1 diesel fuel. It's thinner then #2 diesel that is used as engine fuel, has a lower boiling point, has less energy, and less lube.

Some winter-blends of farm-diesel are 1/2 kerosene in some areas. Also, JP8 military fuel is pretty close to kerosene.

You will get poorer fuel efficiency with kerosene and it will shorten the life of the fuel-injection pump if you use it all the time.

There are six classes of fuel-oil, 1 to 6 - but 1 and 2 are the only types usually seen at the consumer level. #3 used to be a lot more common and was sold as cheap "distillate" tractor fuel.
