Hey, What do you think of this one? Went and looked at it today, seemed to run good had a sound when it started, like the bendix was out, but the batt was weak from not running for a while. Do u think thats a decent price?

Myself i think it about 2000 to high as to the starter ????????? don't know i did not hear it . The 666 is and Ok tractor . The biggie on them is the shifter as if you think a 06 series shifter can give you fits the shifter on the 656 -the 686 can be a real pain in the drain . the hours are high on it , and you do not know the history of it . If it is not a local tractor then i bet i can tell you where it came from . and they sure did not pay that price for it . There is one in the Farm World paper in Ky for 7500 with as they say a good T/A and almost new tire and the Phone # is 502-268-5566.There is lso a 856 with a 2000 I H loader in Ill. for 6000 now that is not to bad of a price if it is half decent . I do not know what your plans are for the tractor and i will never tell a man what tractor he needs . But i will tell you this never panic buy . As to the starter on that tractor it my just need a bendix or it may need a rebuilt starter and a new ring gear. If your luck is like mine it need both .

It sounded like a bendix to me too. I think it had engine work too, because a tractor of that age shouldn't run that good. So far, 8 grand seems to be the going rate around me for a 666 or 686. Its going to go straight to work on the farm. Im not panicing, but it seems like its in decent shape.

The one in Ky is mine and you are right about the shifter. I took mine all apart and rebuilt it, now it shifts like it should. When I first got it it got hung in gear a lot and about drove me batty. I had to fix it.

Before you buy it make sure the TA is good. Get it good and warm and then take it and put it in 4th gear rev it up and apply the brakes until the engine is under load pull back on the Ta and keep your foot on the brakes and then push the TA lever forward into DD, it shoud jump ahead instantly with no hesitation. Thats how i try the Ta . Good luck Erik..

I do not understand WHY people are so upset about a bad T/A . Myself i just loved to buy I H tractors with the T/A out plum loved it and bought all that i could find . To me doing a T/A was the cheapest repair that i could do other then fixen a charging system . Buying one with a bad engine now your talking bucks and time .

I suppose it's because they either do not know how to fix it themselves or lack the facilities to do so, or both. They check the labor plus parts at a dealer and get scared. At any rate they are overwhelmed.
Not to mention there are some people we really do not want to try to take a tractor apart, let alone check the oil.

many of us are thankful for independent shops like you , TV
and appreciate the help you are willing to give when we try to do it ourselves.

I wish i was closer to you .The 686 i have needs to be split it has a Ta clutch that slips when engaged under load. I want to do it myself but i just dont know i dont want to bite of more than i can handle. When i hear you talk about doing that it sounds like no big deal. Where is the best place to get the TA parts? And when you do a TA do you put a heavy duty one in or just a regular ta. Thanks Erik..

All I can say is you did not run long it enough. It has blowby and the exhaust smells sweet. Engine rebuild is in your future. Don"t let the hours fool you into thinking something was done to it already. Were the hydraulics still jumpy? If I remember it was the hitch that was jumpy. I ask about the starter and the owner said huh never had a problem before. I even ask him to fix it, NO! $8,000 gonna need new rear tires soon. That tractor is gonna run you well over $10,000 real soon in tires alone. And hope all else is well. TA was good when I ran it, nice and smooth and did not slip.

Had it nice and hot, drove it in all gears and down a road about a mile down a STEEP hill. Put it in forth and played with the ta all the way back up the hill. Ran it wide open to see what she would do.

One thing I just remembered. I talked to the one kid there. They were going to make a pulling tractor out of it. That is why it has them tires on it but they could not make the weight class so they decided to sell it.

You know, your right. Any other decent guy would have offered to fix the starter at least. He wouldn't even deliver it and all for 8,000. The lights didn't even work, and the clutch seemed to be getting close to being out of adjustment. That guy there got nasty with me before about a 1066 that i wanted. Asked him to fix the lights " For that damn price, i ain't fixin nothin". So you know what there has to be a better one out there. He has had the tractor for over a year, if he wants to pull it so bad, go for it.

AMEN to that. Vet and a few others, like a fellow here close to me are a blessing. Very few know how and will take the time to fix them.
