Super A , getting started

I am about to restore a SA, Don't know squat about old tractors but excited about learning
Tractor was running when parked in a Barn 16 yrs ago. I will complete servicing and will try to crank for the first time. Any tips or warnings you guys want to share?

The ALL ran when parked and you couldn't be in a better place to get advice. Probably couldn't have a better starter tractor either.

Use a pump type oilcan to fill the oil gallery with oil befor cranking it up. A small plastic or rubber tube might make a good connection. Several cans of oil might be needed to be pumped in to prime it well.
Make sure it is in neutral, to avoid bad reality. Jim

An A we found decorating an estate's road frontage was our second tractor. One suggestion I"d have would be to take out the carb and clean it. Ours was full of mouse droppings clear inside the choke cavity and into the venturi. You don"t have to rebuild it for that first try at starting, but you at least won"t blow a bunch of stuff into the cylinders. Good luck.

Well first things first. IF it has a hand crank on the front under the grill see if it will turn over.

If it does not have a hand crank Put one hand on the fan belt to make it tight and then spin the fan over and see if the engine will turn over.

IF NOT. you can hook a battery up and try pulling the starter handle quickly. If the engine doesnt turn over let go.

Sence it does not run, I would remove the sparkplugs and spray some PB blaster Into each hole, Just for good measure and that way the piston rings will be somewhat lubricated.

Make sure no one is behind or infront of the tractor, Dont assume the clutch works and make sure its in neutral first. Keep that choke lever handy when starting just incase the engine races and you cant control it or the tractor just takes off.

Thats about all i can think of for first start warnings . Theres no place better then this site for advice on these tractors. Someone has always been there done that.

GOOD LUCK AND COME BACK WITH YOUR RESULTS

Pulled the SA out of old barn, presure washed and pulled into garage. Got operators manual and shop book from YT. Looks in good shape, fuel strainer braket broke. exhaust manifold has been welded. Will spend the next week on complete service and maybe start engine next week end.
Nearest IH dealer is 2 hrs away. Will learn to shop on line for parts. Need gaskets now.
