internation 656 hydrostat

I have a IH 656 with the hydrostat transmission. After pulling a plow for a little and getting the tractor warmed up, it wants to stop pulling. After I let it sit a while and it cools off it'll start pulling again. Has anyone had any problems like this? Are the pumps most likely worn and need replaced?

Thanks.

Unfortunately that is a typical symptom of scoring on the pump and motor plates.

The brass and steel plates, one of each for both pump and motor, must have completely smooth surfaces. There are oil passages in both plates to allow oil under pressure to pass through. A highly machined surface is necessary to cleanly cut off the flow. Any grooving in the surfaces allows oil to enter between the plates and the pressure will then force them apart causing the tractor (not engine) to stall.
