F504 clutch question

I'm having some small problem with shifting gears on my 504. I have the clutch and TA adjusted per the I&T manual and I have double checked the adjustment. The problem is sometimes when I try to shift, I can't move the shifter until I shift the TA. Also, The clutch is fully engaged in the first quarter of the travel and the rest is just play. Basically, is my adjustment out or is my clutch worn out? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have an adjustment problem. If the clutch engages when the pedal is 1/4 from the floor, there is way too much free play. Check your adjustments again. You want the TA clutch to just barely release when the foot clutch pedal is on the floor. With worn linkage, you sometimes have to tweek the TA clutch from the factory setting to get this to happen.

Yep , you are trying to set BY THE BOOK and due to the fact that your tractor was used tomuch when NEW the book settings are not going to work. I had the same problem with a neighbours F504 Diesel . So here is what a need to do First set the free travel on the clutch pedal ,Set your clutch free travel to 1 inch , next remove the spring that goes from the clutch shaft bell crank and hold the T/A cross shaft bell crank forward against the T/A release bearing and adjust the clevis so that you can slide the headed pin in with about and 1/8th inch of day light between the clevis loop all yo need here is so that the throw out bearing is not riding on the T/A throw out bearing when your foot is not on the clutch pedal and as you push the clutch down and start to release the main clutch it should also start to release the T/A clutch The spring should hold the T/A release bearing off the fingers and you should be able to see this thru the inspection cover on top . Now as to hitting this dead on the first time don't know as i have trouble at times and have to play with some and sometimes ya have to get some new pins and clevises to get close . You are just a tad to far for a service call .

I agree. With wear you have to stray from the OEM settings. I have been down this road twice. Once if was compsensating for wear. The other was one of the nuts holding the main clutch release fingers backed off.

Good luck,
