temp. gauge for Farmall A

I need to replace the temp. gauge on a 1940 A. The gauge is up front kinda' above the governor housing. From a quick internet search it appears these short lead gauges are pretty pricey. What's the reason why a short lead is about 3 times the price of a long lead?

Don't know about the price but you can use a long lead one by coiling up the excess and using tie wraps to hold it in place. Been like that on my 130 since new. Be aware that the stock location for the temp gauge bulb is in the COLD side of the system. Be sure you get one with the proper temp range. These cooling systems are so overbuilt that a temp gauge will not register unless you work it REALLY HARD.

I know what you mean about the cooling systems being so good they don't register unless worked hard. That's why I wasn't too worried that it never seemed to register. Then once last fall I developed a small leak and had steam coming out the radiator as it overheated (still not registering)
I'll probably do the "coil it up" thing I've done that on another tractor.
