Long story short, tractor ran fine for last year or two,was pulling logs in the woods and the fuel filters (pluggged?)limped the tractor home and put in new filters, spin on diesel fuel filters, filled the filters with fuel and now it wont start, tryed to bleed the air out of the lines and nothing, gave it a couple shots of liquid fire and still nothing, is it maybe the injestor pump out? Is it a pump that runs off of some ahsft or is it electricial?

Hi, the fuel tanks on the 74 series tractors are known for clogging at the outlet at the bottom of the tank. First make sure you have good fuel flow out of the fuel tank, with a clean buket take the fuel line off at the top of the first fuel filter and let it run into the bucket. The fuel should flow the full of the fuel line pipe if it dosen't then there is a problem back in the tank. Sometimes blowing compressed air into the fuel line from the tank will temporarily fix the problem. If you have good fuel flow, then reconnect fuel line. now loosen bleed screw on top of first fuel filter and let fuel flow until no air bubbles, then repeat for next fuel filter.

Next, with STOP/START/RUN lever in START position and throttle half way open crank engine with starter, DO NOT use ethter or crank enginge for more than 30 to 45 seconds at a time or starter will overheat. Wait a minute or two between starter attempts. If you have an air compressor with an air gun attachment, put the air gun in the fuel tank filler hole and take a clean cloth and seal around the filler hole and slightly pressurize the fuel tank and then try cranking the engine. If all that fails you will have to loosen one of the injector lines at the back of the fuel injection pump and then crank the engine. BE CAREFUL of the high pressure Diesel fuel from the injector line as it can penetrate your skin and cause serious harm.

If all that dosen't work then I would be checking the fuel line that comes across the front of the engine or the fuel from last filter to the injection pump. There is no electrical solenoid on the injection pump. The injection pump is direct drive from timing gear.

Hope this helps

I did remove the fuel line from the bottom of the fuel tank on the back left side of tank and no fuel came out,I did blow air in the fuel line fitting and you could hear the fuel bubble and then I took off the fitting and it had a 2"or so tube attached and I blew air through it and reinstalled it and got no fuel to leak out. Does this fitting HAVE to be the one with tube in it?

Hi Carl, from the rear of the tractor, you have to be concerned with the fuel line that comes out of the bottom right of the fuel tank. The left hand side has the return fuel line and the cross over fuel line to the right side. The return line has a check valve on it so fuel will not run back out of the tank. Usually you have to remove the lines and the shut off valve out of the bottom right fuel tank. The left shut off valve only keeps the fuel equal in both sides of the tank. There is also the fuel tank vent tube on the left side as well.

So check fuel flow from line at bottom right of tank this is the input to primary fuel filter.

I have an IH utility diesel and if it ever runs out of fuel, it becomes a major problem to get it restarted. I have found that you have to bleed the fuel line from the filters to the fuel injection pump and make sure the fuel gets at least that far. If it does your good to go, if not we are talking dead battery and major annoyance.

Thanks for your help Jim, I was wondering y the valve on the left side would not drip fuel, check valve.now I look at the right side and it should be plugged with dirt, because no fuel is gettig to the filters.I will drain out the tank now while it is almost emoty and start fresh, THANKS AGAIN.
