IH 504 questions

Gentlemen,

I just found an IH 504 for sale in my home town that I am considering checking out. I spotted it on Craigslist and the owner says all tires are good and it"s a diesel with a blown head gasket. The price is $750. There was no picture of it so for all I know it could be a complete rust bucket. Would this be worth looking into or could there more possible problems that it"s worth? I"ve never owned a diesel so I am completely clueless. I"ve gone through some of the older postings looking for info on this model and about the only negative I could see is possible head gasket problems. Can anyone give me some insight on what the problems are or what the fixes would be? What should I look for as far as the drive train is concerned? The price might be just right to fix it up for a show tractor/toy. Thanks in advance for any advice on this.

Well it may be a blowen head gskt , but myself i would be thinking more but for 750 bucks no matter what is wrong you can not go wrong for that money . Heck ya can't buy a cub cadet for that anymore .

I have one that is a great little tractor, now. When I first got it I was not so sure.Everytime I fixed one leak another would show itself. Thats where my forum name came from,it seemed like Pandoras box everytime I ran it.I put a new clutch in and did a inframe rebuild on the engine, and some other minor stuff. Great utility tractor it was not meant to be a row crop tractor. Any thing I can help You with just post a note,I check this forum evey day. I have to thank the folks on this forum who have helped me with my Pandora,I use it daily now ,probaly deserves a nicer name.

$750 is a fair price for a IH 504 (I assume this is the utility and not a Farmall 504 RC). They both have the D188 engine and it is fairly easy to work on. I'd go for it! Cheap 50 hp tractor.

Heck I need a hundred dollars worth of parts off of it right now! 750.00 plus 2000.00 and you would still have a cheap 504.

Fair? If all it needs is a head gasket, it's an absolute STEAL.

However, my bs meter is pegging and I sincerely doubt it only needs a head gasket. Even with a complete engine rebuilt it's still a steal, though.

I agree on the "head gasket" only problem. If that is all that is wrong, its a helluva deal! I have heard mixed results on surfacing a head and not the block. If the head and block have warped and you only shave the head, it could blow again. I'd try a head gasket only first, if that is all thats wrong.

I have a Farmall 504. Tractor alone, I'd say worth no more than $2500-$3000. After the loader, hydraulics, repairs, ect... I'd have to have $8000-$9000 and its not painted yet!!! Still hard to replace it for $9000.

Here is my little Farmall 504.
