48 Farmall m paint

48 M

New User
I want to paint my 48 m . What is the best paint to use that will hold a shine and not fade. Some people tell me to use a urathane enamal But that paint is really expensive. Is there another paint that will hold up? Also what is the paint code for this year tractor? Thanks

when discussing paint products, quality of paint is directly proportionate to the amount of money you spend. also, the higher line paints with hardeners contain isocyanates, pretty nasty stuff. even a value line paint like tisco alkyd enamel with the hardener is a nasty. from lowest cost to highest, farm store alkyd, then implement dealer modifyed alkyd, to enamels, then single stage urethanes, on up to base/clear systems. you are looking at a price range of 30 dollar a gallon for the alkyds on up to 4-500 per gallon for a high line base clear like a glasurit or speiss hecker. for a working tractor, on a limited budget, the farm and fleet alkyds and the dealer modifyed alkyds give satisfactory results. for a better quality go with a single stage urethane like crossfire from martin senyour. keep in mind the price difference gets staggering. alkyds will run under 200 for paint and primer and reducer. crossfire will run about 500 or so for the full product line. base clear you are at close to a grand. here are a few pivs of tractors i have painted, the cub and 1st m are in tisco alkyd with hardener. the allis b and the second m are in crossfire. i used 2150 i-h for the red.

here is the cub in tisco

The main problem with alkyds is that they fade. If kept outside they have to be waxed frequently or they will fade badly. As a compromise use CaseIH 2150 from the dealer, does not have to have hardener. It supposed to be the modified alkyd that glennster mentioned, I am not sure as the can may just say enamel. If you want the original color code, that is IH 50 which crosses to PPG 70019/DuPont 7410, can be mixed in other brands. You can get it mixed as acrylic enamel, which fades slower than alkyd, it can be used without hardener. Otherwise PPG Omni acrylic urethane, or the equivalent in the DuPont Nason line or MS Crossfire will cost you probably $150-160/gallon for the paint and hardener, not counting the necessary primer and surfacer. For quality paint that is as cheap as it gets. If you go that route, you need a supplied air system for the isos in the hardener, maybe $400, haven't priced one lately.
