no love for the w-4

i just bought a w-4, i haven't picked it up yet. i've been reading through here and find little to nothing on the w-4. is it because of the lower production numbers or is it just not a favored tractor. i plan on mounting a 7.5' snowplow that i have on it, and pulling firewood with it, along with the average small chores. thanks.

the w-4 is basically a standard version of the farmall h. its primary design was for heavy drawbar and belt work while the h was a row crop. there were quite a few of the w-4's built. it is a good solid tractor, and ideal for what your intended use is.

nothing wrong with a W4 good tractor, I had one for a while. Only thing I didnt like was how yer butt hangs out in space off the back of the tractor and how hard it was to change the starter on it, I ended up removing the entire belt drive unit to change the starter,

There are a ton of them out there, can pretty much buy any part new from case ih or aftermarket for them. not a lot to talk about

I had an OS-4, and it had a hand clutch, as opposed to the W's with a foot clutch. Very good running tractor. Dandy Dave!

I have to do that on my MD as well. I might not have to remove it all the way, but just wedge it up with a prybar or something to get a little extra room.

Most of the time whenever your read an H post it will apply to a W-4.

Hi folks, i believe the first W4s made were sent to the UK. Most of the ones i have seen have three figure serial numbers including 503, 512, 538, and several with 700 serial numbers. MJ

Great Tractor. Much more popular here in New Zealand in the 1940 than were the Farmall H. Mine is 1941 serial number BH2381 (no W, the model number also only states 4, must have lost the W stamp that day, the Engine is WBHM2133) was designed to burn kerosene.

There were a lot of W series in eastern Canada, not too many row crops, so basically the local new IH buyer in the 1940's had A, W-4 and W-6 to pick from. H's and M's are around though.

I have a 1950 W4 that I always wanted as a kid on the farm. If I dont drive it every day I look at it as it sets in the garage on CARPET! I catch my wife refering to it as her tractor quite often. Every one should put a W4 on their "Bucket List". Enjoy it!! W4
