Farmall 450 Gas

Just wondering if anyone has the dimentions of the Exhaust pipe. I think it is just a 2" pipe Outer diameter, but what about the thread, is it just Pipe thread or is it some OEM thread spacing?

Wondering if I can just take it to a machine shop and say re-thread it?

Thanks
Tony

Tony - It's standard 2" iron pipe thread.

Any decent pipefitter, sprinkler mechanic, etc. can rethread your existing exhaust stack. Or cut/thread you a new from 2" steel pipe if the old one is burned too thin.

Thanks for the info!

Also, can the inside of the Exhaust Mainfold be re-threaded also? The pipe keeps coming out and both sides look pretty bad.

Sure!

Stuff an oily rag into the manifold to catch chips, then GENTLY run a 2" pipe tap into the opening.

Key word here is "gentle" - the manifold casting is fairly brittle!

I beg to differ Bob. There is nothing gentle about a 2" pipe tap. It takes alot of torque to get threads with that size tap. I think I had to put a 3' or 4' cheater pipe on that pipe wrench. The tractor is a SMTA.

I know the dedicated restorers will gasp, but if you can't get it threaded it's pretty easy to weld a piece of pipe to it. Better yet weld a 2" pipe coupling to it and you will get your threads back.

The Ace in Clinton, WI can thread you a new pipe right in the store. I would check with the local hardware store. Otherwise Lowe's or Home Depot can do it, but you would probably be cheaper to just buy a pipe nipple. It would kind of annoy me having those threads in there that aren't supposed to be. Then again, the pipe is welded in on my SMTA. There is no point in buying a new manifold just bc the pipe threads are crappy. I would thread it in and weld it up if the threads don't hold it well. MAKE SURE THE PIPE IS STRAIGHT if you weld it. You would look a little foolish if the muffler is pointing crooked.
