CHANGING A FARMALL M ENGINE

HOW MUCH WORK IS IT AND HOW LONG TO SWITCH OUT A ENGINE AND A FARMALL M ? ARE THERE ANY SHORTCUTS OR THINGS I SHOULD KNOW BEFORE HAND ?

Changing out an engine is quick if you have the hoist and stands. Also depends on how much swapping of parts like manifold, carb, mag or distributor, clutch, flywheel, etc. Probably could swap engines in as short as a few hours.

yup, you will need to drop the front axle either wide or narrow, then remove the radiator and shroud. then the front bolster and frame rails. the front bolster is very heavy and poorly balanced.

The whole key is to be sure everything is supported as you take things apart.
We just did a front seal on an M by supporting the rails, loosening the front engine mount bolts, removing the bolster bolts and using a engine hoist with a chain wrapped around the top after you take the grill off.

Keep the chain on the back side of the bolster and relieve the the pressure and roll the whole thing off the front. You will have to pry on the side rails to get them loose.

You just need to loosen or remove 2 radiator hoses and the radiator support rod and the whole thing can roll out with a little patience.

Then you will need to block up and brace under the bell housing to remove the side rails and engine. There is one bolt behind the starter and a long bolt above it that is over looked besides rail bolts that you need to remove.

Take your time and be safe checking all your blocking and bracing for good support.
