farmall m generator cutout relay ??s

I bought my uncles m last fall. It is all original with the 6v battery, generator and cut out relay. I"m going through all the wiring. All the wires check out and the terminations are good on all ends. It has the 4 pos switch. My question is I noticed the wire that goes to the C/O relay marked terminal BATT was disconnected. When I try to connect it, it sparks, I put on my clamp-on amp meter on the wire and it goes up to 60 amps dc. Why would it do that? The tractor was off when I tried it.

Most likely the cutout relay contacts are welded closed.

However 60 amps is a little high for backflow current through a stopped 6 volt generator (20 - 30 amps seems more reasonable). So it might also be a dead short inside the cutout.

Either way suggest you pop the cover off the cutout and take a peek inside!

When the tractor is running what kind of voltage should I get between the BATT terminal on the C/O relay and the neg terminal on the battery?

Im thinkin the same as my friend Bob M. If the Cutout Relay was working correct it would be OPEN so it wouldnt draw any current when you connected the BAT terminal to a hot voltage source. However if its contacts are stuck/burned/welded shut it will draw high current, and in fact if you removed the belt the genny will spin provided its in working condition.

With the belt in place the genny cant turn and is in Locked Rotor Condition which draws high current and 50 amps dont surprise me all that much. HOWEVER if the belt were removed it could spin and then Id only expect maybe a 20 amp draw.

Place an ohmmeter or continuity tester across that relay and it should be OPEN but if its very low ohms its stuck closed. One might unstick the contacts but once the shiny silvery coating is burned off they can stick again.

PS have you changed polarity??

I tested the generator on the tractor. It runs ccw. With the light switch in the lowest position everything is fine, when I change to the other positions is when I get a high current, like a dead short. With the light switch in the lowest position my ammeter shows its charging but I only get about 6.3 volts on the battery

I forgot to ask how exactly does that C/O relay work. There are two set of contacts. How exactly do they function.

"two sets of contacts"???????? Are you sure you have a cutout and not a voltage regulator? How many terminals are on it? Look at the bottom and see if there is a terminal there.

Looking at farmallbobs wiring diagrams I thought I had #3. But looking closer I must have a voltage regulator..There are terminals L, BATT, F, and a wire coming in from the back which goes to A on the generator . So I'm thinknig in the past someone put on the VR when the C/O relay went bad? Do I need to be in the market for a C/O relay?

Haven't looked at Bob's wiring diagrams, but IF someone hooked up the VR and hooked the former field wire to the L terminal of the VR, then there would be a dead short to ground thru the 4 pos light switch when it is in the H, D, B positions. The former field wire should be used to feed power from the L terminal on the VR to the light switch fuse.

Geeeeeeeee Now you went and changed the story from a Cutout Relay to a Voltage Regulator lol

Soooooo heres my Troubleshooting Procedure, work through it for a VR and it can help diagnose the problem
