Surging Cub

Its probably been covered several times in this forum before, but my 48 Cub has started surging under load. It happened all at once while I was ploughing. The engine seems to run as normal unloaded both at at idle and midrange speed, but when running hard now it cuts on and off. (It will not die completely unless really in a bind) The total strenth seems to be somewhere around a half. What would be the first several things to look for? Thanks

sounds like fuel starvation. check for restricted fuel filter, plugged main jet in carb. if no luck check carb float level setting. have you or previous owner readjusted the governor settings? just my 2 cents worth. good luck, d. coleman

If it started all of a sudden I'd bet on a partially clogged main jet. Remove it and clean both openings with a soft copper wire then blow it out with air before re-installing.

I will be checking the carb jet and the fuel strainer/bowl tomorrow, thanks. I wont be able to give her a good testing until the weather clears off. You will hear from me then.

I went into the main jet today and removed a small piece of trash in the jet tube I am almost sure. It may be a while before I give her the real test, but many thanks to both of you for your knowledge. It's awfully nice to have such a resource to draw upon. It almost seems like one could get lazy with remembering anything with brains such as yours at my fingertips.
Thanks
