1939 M vs any other year

I have had someone tell me that a 39 M has had a faster 1st gear than any other M of any other year? is this true? To all my research all the gears top shaft and counter shaft all have the same # of teeth. That would make them the same. Is there something I am missing...I know that the 39 M is a tad bit lighter right? any help is greatly appreciated!

gearing is the same though out the M's unless it was ordered with a special set. They are a fraction lighter then the rest of the M's that supersede it but not a lot lighter. The top cover on the trans has a slot cast into it. The seat is also different. There is a few other things that are 39/early 40 Ms have hood fasteners are quarter turn aircraft style nuts called dzues fasteners. PTO is a flat back style this was used to at least 41 though. There are a few other things that are unique to the 39 but that is the main areas.

39's came with 36 inch rears, or at least some of them did, I'm not clear on that. With smaller tires, the speeds would be slower.

Don't think so. The H and M had the standard 1st gear and a slower, not faster optional 1st gear.
