I have found what I believe to be a MTA Propane. Can anyone tell me what the letters stand for in the serial number and it is 83507DS?
Thank you!

That looks more like the part number for the head.

Did you get that number off a metal tag on the side of the tractor?

Thats a late one, last SMTA serial # was 83523.
Lots of those tractors with the LP equipment had higher compression pistons that worked better with the LP, indicated by a D or a E suffix.

The number came off of the tag. The tractor however has the sticker that is just round that says Super M-TA and no flag saying torque amplifier. The TA is not there and this tractor and the sticker appear original as in that it's never been restored.
CubnM you seem to be saying by having the letter S it should have a TA. Is there any letter that designates it as LP gas? The fuel tank on this tractor goes the long ways and not cross wise.

Should have come with a T/A if the tag has a S.
Look at the website tomsantiquetractors.com, under SMTA tractors. You will find a picture of a SMTA LP serial 83338 ES that was one IH sent to a company in texas to have the LP parts installed. Thats probably the type tractor you are posting about.

All the 1954 were SMTA tagged without the wing meant no TA but may still have the live pto, My dad had 2 smta's 1 with ta 1 without but both had live pto and hydralics

Alot of Farmalls were shipped from the factory with "D" 5000ft altitude pistons to Lubbin Texas and were converted to LP. If the tank runs the long way with the hood its a conversion. If it runs crossways its factory. I have a factory SM LP.

Duanes,
D is 5000 ft altitude pistons
S TA with LPTO
Pics! we need pics to more accurately tell you if your tractor is Factory or a conversion.
SM-LP Stage I & II have cross a wise tank,BUT! I have seen pics of SMTA-LP with the Stage I & II tank. Out in Arizona.
The Quinesential SMTA-LP has a long wise tank it has a Mono-Valve assembly at the rear of the tank @ the 11:00 position just forward if the rear end cap!
Most gas to LP conversions after dealer delivery, (Field conversions) had long tanks but the Fill/Vapor and Liquid valves were strung out individually along the side of the tank.
IH was very poor at keeping records,Info on the SMTA-LPs is scarser than hens teeth.
IH commissioned 500 to be built,it is believed that no where near that were built.3 yrs ago I knew of an old IH Field Tech that was commissioned bu IH to do Gas To LP conversion and had authority to re stamp the Factory tag! he had a little black book that was full on Farmers names, Tractor Serial #s, Dates and Address on all his conversion. He later died, Kids/Grandkids cleaned out his house and that little black book was lost and so was the Info it held!!!!
There were 2 main tank Companies commissioned to do that. Lubbock and San Angelo Texas. Tractors minus tanks ans carbs were loaded up and sent there by rail and truck! Trucks were loaded up with tanks and carb assemblies and sent back to the factory. Final assembly was completed at all three places. All tractors Are Considered FACTORY.
Later I learned that IH had commissioned 3 other tank companies in the Deep South to do tractors in those areas, I do not have the name or city where they were located at this time.
There is No Rhyme or reason to the Serial #s, no one I know has ever seen two senquential #s of any order.
Most info I have has been gathered from others, and from old IH Dealers, Shop hands, Field techs, ect, ect.
If you would like to visit hollar at me over the weekend and I will be glad to visit with you are anyone else. My # is 512-577-3837.Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Your tractor is very nice, very, very, nice but tell me..... Why did you paint the rear axles red? The tractor is near perfect except for that.....
