560 starter end play

Hi all,

Having starting problems with my 560 Diesel. I got the starter pulled out and I'm guessing the brushes are shot. But I am seeing a lot of end play in the starter. How much end play should there be?

thanks, Harry

I don't recall ever seeing a spec for the armature end play in the Delco manuals. The minimum clearance for the drive gear to stop collar is .020". The stop collar should not contact the drive end housing.

The end play is controlled by spacer washers on the commutator end and between the center bearing and the armature. I have seen the commutator end washers in some rebuilt units that have been replaced with non-hardened washers which bend in use allowing excessive end play. If there is excessive wear in the commutator end frame it is sometimes possible to add a second washer to compensate for the wear. When assembled the armature must not drag from lack of end play.
