Does anyone know the purpose of the plate on the left hand side of the block directly behind the carburetor and manifold? I just noticed that mine is missing a couple bolts/studs and the holes were filled with RTV! Pictures coming soon...

That plate is the "water header cover", also called the water jacket cover. The RTV is probably sealing up the holes where the bolts have been twisted off.

I just walked out to the M I have an looked and that is the tappet cover so yep it would be best to pull it off, clean it up and put bolts in all the holes or sooner or later you will have a major oil leak for it

One of them is leaking coolant.

Should I just RTV over it? Or maybe JB weld?

Thanks for the quick response!

I also had condensation in my oil when I checked it (looked like chocolate milk and after letting it sit the water separated from the oil. I wonder If this could be the culprit?

Rich, the tappet cover is on the other side.

The water header cover leaking coolant has nothing to do with condensation getting in the engine oil. You need to change the oil and the filter NOW, and then watch the oil for future contamination which could be the result of internal coolant leaks such as a cracked block, cracked head, or a bad head gasket.

Applying more RTV to an existing coolant leak will be only a temporary, band aid fix. To fix it right, you need to remove that cover, clean everything good, get a new gasket, and re-install. While you have the cover off, inspect it good. You may find it to be rusted away beyond use.

I'll do that, I changed the oil and filter this morning and took her for a ride around the block when I discovered she needs a new thermostat also since it's stuck open.

I'll have to do that when I get a chance to drain the coolant down halfway or so.

That's why the condensation is in your oil! What makes you think the thermostat is bad?

Ya if I had taken the time to look on both sides the first time I would have noticed that and then opened up the book to be sure but I just ran out real fast looked and came back

I ran it for about 10-15 minutes including a 5th gear run wide open down the road about 1/2 mile and the coolant gage barely moved.

Its not letting the motor get fully warmed up. Previously this tractor was running an airator on a catfish pond.
