m carb cold weather

I have a 49 M to move snow with. This winter when it was cold(-10) the old girl would start just fine, partly due to the 12 volt system, but it would backfire alot like every 2 seconds. When it warmed up this all cleared up until the next time. I could not clear it up completely by adjusting the choke but temporarily stop it. Is this normal or do I have some minor carb issues? Is this harmful to anything? I haven't done anything since it worked and it will warm up so I can work on it then.

-10? Mine gives problems at 32, takes a long time to warm up -- nothing wrong with the carb. Put a plastic sheet over the grille, and keep an eye on the temperature gauge. Also you may have an icing up problem with the carb and gas.

Most likely the cold weather was causing it to run lean. Should be fine as the weather warms up. mike
