Changing HyTran oil - what Secret Tool Needed

Hi...what size extension is needed to get the front plug out on my Farmall 460 in order to drain the gear oil? The 3/8 extenstion is to large and the 1/4 is to small.......what do I use? The Plug hole is square...Any help is appreciated.

You need a 5/16ths drain plug socket .. You can get a complete drain plug socket set from Mac tools . Snap On tools . But be ready to shell out a few bucks. . IF you could find some hardened 5/16ths key stock that may work if it was not put in by King Kong and been out a few times since the tractor was new .

I can tell you I was using some key stock to remove the top bull plug for the tranny fill hole and busted out one side of it. King Kong here wanted it tight so maybe snow over the winter and rain will not leak into the tranny. WD 40 works wonders but it was too late when I used it. If that is a regular pipe thread then I'll get another with a square nubben on it for a regular wrench.

When you use the side plug to fill it up to level, get a stick, tape, dowel, or whatever and make you own dip stick to check the oil. Then you will never have to pull that side plug again.

You don't need to King Kong the plug in there. If the oil isn't getting out water isn't getting in.

Besides, do you have the tractor in deep water frequently? Do you park it in the swimming pool or something? There is no way you're getting water contamination through the drain plug from a little snow blowing past it.

The true source of water contamination is leaving the tractor out in the rain for months and months. Secondary is condensation.

Mine sits out 24/7. In driving rain from thunderstorms, ice and sleet that accumulates, and up to a foot of snow that covers everything until it melts. We've had lots of snow this winter.
