Cleaning an Oil Bath Filter

I noticed on my pre-cleaner on my new M, that there was a mud dobber nest inside. When I removed that to clean it out I noticed my entire intake tube down the precleaner was filled with them! After removing all the mud I checked out the bottom of the screen and it was filthy, the oil was totaly saturated with mud and just nasty.

What would you guys use to clean these? So far to get the sludge out of the screen I am using brake cleaner. It looks like this hasn't been done for a while...

Brake cleaner a good method, but fairly expensive. I like to soak mine in the parts washer for a long while. Then I hit it with air and soak it again. It looks better, but not perfect.
I bought a toilet bowl cleaner at the dollar store that fits the intake pipe and inside of the air cleaner perfectly. I use that for those areas.
You can take them apart and clean that media or even replace it. It sounds fairly difficult bc you have to drill out spot welds and reweld some stuff. I am sure somebody will let you know a little more about that side of cleaning.

I have pulled the guts out of them but it is not a fun job, only way to really clean them though. That is the problem with oil bath filters, when they plug they will channel on edges and allow dirt to pass through.

Same situation on my 460U; I on a parts run, I had IH take apart the canister. The middle section was completely rust powder similar to coffee grounds and the top and bottom were junky. They used a power washer for cleanup. They ordered two packages of new material - still available. Now I need to find material to replace the gasket.

I forgot to say I wash mine out with HOT water and then blow them with air. I haven't tried the hot water pressure washer yet. I am not sure how I would hold the air filter so it doesn't fly away. :D

Another way to do it to take it to a machine shop and have them hot tank it. That works real well. Much easier than taking it all appart.
